Injury crash involving wrong way driver on I-75 under investigation

The Bowling Green Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a serious injury crash involving a wrong way driver.

The crash, involving a commercial vehicle and a sport utility vehicle, occurred Sunday (Oct. 19) at approximately 2:46 a.m., on northbound Interstate 75 near milepost 198 in Northwood.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a Freightliner tractor-trailer combination operated by Kewal Singh, 44, Ontario, Canada, was northbound when it was struck by a Chevrolet Equinox, operated by Jose Perez, 29, Toledo, that was driving southbound in the northbound lanes. After impact, the Freightliner went off the left side of the road, where it struck the median cable.

Perez and his two passengers, Walter Orellana, 34, and Ervin Ordonez, 22, both of Toledo, were transported to Mercy Health-St. Vincent Medical Center. Perez had non life-threatening injuries. Orellana and Ordonez sustained critical injuries in the crash. Singh had non life-threatening injuries and was treated at the scene.

All northbound lanes were closed at the time of crash and as of 12:30 p.m. were still closed due to clean up of spilled diesel fuel.

The OSHP was assisted on scene by Rossford and Northwood fire departments, Wright Tire & Auto, Bubba’s Towing and Ohio Department of Transportation.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash. This incident remains under investigation.
