Lynne Rundle Carlson of Bowling Green passed away peacefully at Heritage Corner on Thursday, February 22, 2024 with family by her bedside.
Lynne was born April 25, 1937, to Earl and Elinor Rundle on the Little Cannonball River Ranch in western North Dakota, growing up in nearby Marmarth and New England. She worked at the family-owned local newspaper in New England sparking her interest in journalism. Lynne graduated from New England High School valedictorian in 1955. Always very musical, she played the organ for her local church in high school as well as sang in church choirs throughout her youth.
Lynne attended the University of Montana, Missoula, for two years before transferring to the University of North Dakota. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and minors in English and German in 1959. After college she took a bicycle tour of Europe before becoming a reporter for the Steamboat Pilot in Steamboat Springs, CO.
The US Navy recruited her in 1961. LTJG Lynne was first stationed in Washington D.C. before being transferred to Bremerhaven Naval Station in Germany.
On an Air Force plane flight from Omaha, NE to Washington, D.C. she met Air Force Lt. Alvar Carlson, and were married in London, England, on September 24, 1964 (59 years). They honeymooned in Wales, Scotland, and England. An avid genealogist, Lynne especially loved Cornwall where much of her family came from.
Lynne left the US Navy honorably in 1965 and moved to Minneapolis, MN, where Alvar was completing his PhD. at the University of Minnesota. They then moved to Trinidad, CA and eventually to Bowling Green, OH, when Alvar accepted a faculty position at Bowling Green State University in 1970.
Lynne earned a Master of Accountancy degree at Bowling Green State University while working for Cresset Chemical in Weston, OH. Upon earning her CPA, she worked for Ohio Plate Glass in Toledo, OH, and Chemi-Trol in Gibsonburg, OH, and taught accounting at the University of Toledo and BGSU. Lynne retired in 1997.
Lynne and Alvar traveled extensively to many countries on six continents, her favorite countries being Chile and Croatia. Locally, she was a member of the Greenwood Chapter Order of Eastern Star, the Toledo Museum of Art and served on the Wood County Mental Health Board. She was an avid reader and enjoyed solving daily crossword puzzles. Lynne enjoyed Native American art and supported three western Native American schools.
Lynne is survived by her husband, Alvar, daughter Eden (John) Wyatt of San Antonio, TX, son Kurt (Hope) Carlson of Austin, TX, and five grandchildren: Lucas Wyatt of Denver, CO, Matthew Wyatt and Annika Wyatt of San Antonio, TX, Ava Carlson of College Station, TX, and Greta Carlson of Austin, TX. There are nine nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers Robert and Philip, and sister Rachel.
A private service will be held on March 12, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Dunn Funeral Home located in the Historical District of Bowling Green at 408 W. Wooster St. Lynne will be buried privately with military honors at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH, on the following day.
