Merry A Sonnenberg

Merry A. Sonnenberg, born on March 26, 1954, in Toledo, Ohio, passed away on May 29, 2024, in Bowling Green, Ohio. Merry was the only daughter of the late Iro M. Morton and Mary L. (Thompson) Morton.

Merry proudly served her country as a Marine, embodying the spirit of dedication and service throughout her life. Following her military service, she found joy in her work as a courier in Ohio and Michigan.

A graduate of Swanton High School, Merry furthered her education at Owens Community College, earning two associate degrees. She was a student of history and passed her knowledge to her children during their childhood summers.

Merry had a passion for crocheting, often creating beautiful pieces that brightened the lives of those around her. She adored bright colors, especially the color purple. Her love for animals was profound, especially her affection for cats, which she adored and cared for deeply.

Merry loved singing and praising Jesus; she sang in her church choir for nearly 40 years. Merry also enjoyed traveling and exploring new places with Doyle Sonnenberg, like the particularly memorable family trip to Yellowstone and the Rocky Mountains. Fond of puns and a turn of phrase to be goofy, Merry often made silliness from sadness. She was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and spent many enjoyable hours cheering them on.

Merry’s memory will be cherished by her children, Adam Matthews and Cathleen (Matthew J.) Cole, and her four beloved grandchildren, Adam Jr., Zada, Calliope, and Ember. She was preceded in death by her parents and two grandchildren, Delaney and Stormy.

A celebration of Merry’s life will be held on June 14th 2024 at 11:00 am, with visitation at 10:00 am. The Visitation and Service will be held at the Church of the Cross, 1750 Eastgate Rd.Toledo, Ohio 43614 and burial with military honors will be held at Portage Cemetery, Portage, OH 43451 at 1:30 pm. Contributions can be made to the Wood County Humane Society, reflecting Merry’s enduring love for animals and her compassionate spirit.
