Merton Samuel “Sam” Compton, 76, of Bowling Green, Ohio passed away December 20, 2024. He was born August 20, 1948 in Circleville, Ohio to the late Merton Stanley and Carrie Elizabeth (Wiggins) Compton. He married Linda Main on September 25, 1998 and she survives.
Sam served his country proudly in the United States Air Force on the 601st Combat Photography Squadron at Korat Air Force Base in Thailand from 1968-1969. Following his military service he was employed by the FBI from 1971-1972. He worked as a Police Officer for the Springfield Ohio Police Department where he served as the DARE Instructor from Springfield Schools. He retired in 1995.
He was a life member of the VFW Post #7424 in Wauseon, Ohio. In 2015, Sam was elected to the VFW National Home for Children Board as Trustee D-4 representing Ohio, Maryland, and West Virginia. He served as Department Voice of Democracy Chairman, Department Sr. Vice Commander and then Department Commander. At the local level, Sam served as Post Commander, District Commander and Department Commander.
Sam was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan, enjoyed traveling and spending time with his friends and family.
Along with his wife of 26 years, Linda, Sam is survived by his nieces and nephews Jeremy (Kyle) Main, Jonathan (Jerilyn) Main and Chase Main (Lisa Chalk) as well as great-nieces and nephews Jerrad, Conner, Blake, Jillian and Jace.
Services will be private for the family. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Dunn Funeral Home in Bowling Green.
