Michael always loved to draw. He started out drawing clowns, NFL football players and Rock Stars, especially KISS. At MVCD School he majored in art, drew cartoons and drew characterizations of his 35 classmates and some of his teachers. Sports were always a part of his life. He was on an AAU wrestling team and he won his weight class for NW Ohio at age 10, which qualified him for the Ohio AAU finals and came in 5th. As a pre-teen he started to play an acoustic guitar, but switched to bass which he has played for over 40 years. He and his friends formed bands and he started playing gigs when he was in high school. He not only played, but he also sang and wrote lyrics and music. He played in many bands in Toledo. Another creative endeavor for Mike is his love for cooking and creating recipes. He set up a company MAGUIRE FOODS. He had made a recipe for Maguire’s Irish Barbeque Sauce accompanied by an amusing story of it being an old family recipe from Enniskillen Castle where the Maguire Irish Clan lived. He sold the sauce in the Toledo area and it was shipped around the country. It was especially popular in the NE United States. One of his clients took the sauce on the Today Show. Afterwards a columnist called Mike from the Wall Street Journal to interview him and the interview was published.
Mike graduated from the University of Toledo with a BA in 1994. He re-enrolled at UT to work on his master’s in education. He worked at the Toledo Autism Academy and was presently working as a full-time teacher at Bowsher High School working with small classes for very special children.
Mike learned love from his family. His granddads did some very wonderful things for him. Fred Maguire was a professor at Ohio State University. Woody Hayes was his friend. So, he took Mike to Woody’s office and Woody took him into the stadium and let him run down the field and then gave him an autographed book. Later he sent him a letter saying he hoped to see him at OSU someday. His grandpa H. Lloyd Jones bought him a football that was autographed by Archie Griffin, Woody Hayes and other members of a Championship OSU football team.
Michael loved his family deeply. He coached his son’s soccer team. He attended his daughters’ events with pride which included sports, music and drama. He continued to be a good dad to Annette’s children by attending many events and teaching them to play guitar.
