More South Main Street construction underway … what’s happening and when will it happen

With summer here, the construction crews have returned to complete unfinished business on South Main Street in Bowling Green.

Crews have been working over the past several weeks to repair sections of South Main Street impacted by the waterline improvements installed throughout 2024. Phase 2 of the South Main Street waterline improvement and paving project is scheduled to begin the week of June 30.

For the first couple months, work will include the installation of drainage, sidewalk, and curb repairs, as well as the installation of a shared use path along the west side of the road, between Napoleon Road and Gypsy Lane Road.

Work will then shift to the milling of existing pavement and concrete repairs to the base layer of road. An intermediate layer of asphalt and temporary striping will be installed until the entire roadway, between Ordway Avenue and the southern corporation limit, is prepared for the final course of asphalt.

Final pavement completion is anticipated in late September, with remaining signalized work to follow. This schedule is dependent upon weather and progress of work.

One lane of travel, in both directions, along with access to businesses and homes, will be maintained throughout the duration of the project, although additional intermittent closures at intersections will be necessary as work progresses.

This is the final phase of the South Main Street waterline improvement and paving project that began in 2024. In addition to the waterline replacement work, completed in late 2024, improvements will include:

  • The repaving of South Main Street, between Ordway Avenue and the southern corporation limit.
  • Curb and sidewalk repairs, along with ADA ramp improvements.
  • The installation of a separated shared use path along the west side of South Main Street, between Napoleon and Gypsy Lane roads.
  • Traffic signal replacement, road widening and dedicated left turn lanes at the South Main/Napoleon intersection.
  • The installation of two pedestrian hybrid beacons between Gypsy Lane and Napoleon roads.
  • Planting of approximately 80 new trees along the South Main corridor.
