Take Back the Night will once again return to Bowling Green State University on Friday, April 4, in the Jerome Library’s Pallister Conference Room. The event is hosted by the Center for Women and Gender Equity in collaboration with The Cocoon.
Take Back the Night is an active empowerment and demonstration event for individuals who have experienced intimate partner violence and sexual violence, including sexual assault, sexual abuse, trafficking, stalking, gender harassment, and relationship violence.
This event is held to provide a safe, supportive, and uplifting space for individuals to speak out about the violence in their lives, mourn those who have lost their lives due to violence, advocate for those living with violence, and to be in community. In addition to local efforts, Take Back the Night is recognized annually across the country.
To show your support of survivors of sexual violence, share your story of survivorship, or help spread awareness about the issue in this community, consider joining this event.
Doors open at 5:45 p.m., followed by a welcome program from 6:15-7:15 p.m. featuring speakers Dr. Sandra Earle, BGSU university advocate, and Rebecca Facey, city of Toledo prosecutor, as well as a performance by the student-led Elem3nt Dance Team.
A march is scheduled for 7:15-8:15 p.m. This march serves as a peaceful demonstration throughout the BGSU campus, involving signs and chants speaking out against sexual and domestic violence.
Following the march is a survivor speak out where survivors of violence will be empowered to share about their experiences as a way to aid in their healing journey.
Take Back the Night will be concluded with a closing program beginning at 9:30 p.m. that will feature a performance by BGSU student and saxophonist Mary Borus.
Community members, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend to show survivors that their stories matter, and that there is no place for sexual violence on the BGSU campus or elsewhere.
Individuals with disabilities are asked to indicate if they need additional services, assistance, or modifications to fully participate in this event either by contacting the CWGE or Accessibility Services at access@bgsu.edu or 419-372-8495, prior to the event.
(This event will share the stories of those who have been impacted by violence. Please be aware of your own well-being and take time to process. Advocates from The Cocoon will be present and are able to assist with support and resources.)
