According to the ensemble’s website: “In this new program, Giddens, Silkroad artists, and special guests explore how music can help us better understand our world, find comfort, process loss and a changing environment, and rebuild community based on our own humanity. Throughout history, humans have turned to music for solace and soothing in times of conflict or stress. In particular, the idea of ‘trance’—leading to a profound peace that is hard to find in modern society—is closely tied to the communal making of music in many different cultures. This shared musical experience helps us uplift one another and find joy and hope through stronger relationships.”
Silkroad was formed by cellist Yo Yo Ma in 1998 “as a reminder that even as rapid globalization resulted in division, it brought extraordinary possibilities for working together. Seeking to understand this dynamic, he recognized the historical Silk Road as a model for cultural collaboration – for the exchange of ideas, tradition, and innovation across borders. In a groundbreaking experiment, he brought together musicians from the lands of the Silk Road to co-create a new artistic idiom: a musical language founded in difference, a metaphor for the benefits of a more connected world.”
Now led by artistic director Rhiannon Giddens, banjo and voice, the ensemble features: Shawn Conley, bass; Layale Chaker, violin; Sandeep Das, tabla; Haruka Fujii, marimba, percussion; Maeve Gilchrist, harp; Karen Ouzounian, cello; Mazz Swift, violin, voice; Niwel Tsumbu, guitar; Francesco Turrisi, frame drums, accordion; Kaoru Watanabe, Japanese flutes and percussion; and guest performers Mauro Durante, percussion, and Mehdi Nassouli, guembri.

The Dorothy E. and DuWayne H. Hansen Musical Arts Series Fund was established in 1996 Dorothy Hanse, an alumna of the College of Musical Arts, and DuWayne Hansen, a former chair of the Department of Music Education, to bring to the campus and the Bowling Green community significant representatives of the musical arts to share their talents with undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Musical Arts and with residents of the community.
