Noted saxophonist Vincent Herring will be the featured Jazz Spotlight artist this week at Bowling Green State University.
Herring, 58, first arrived on the scene in the 1980s. Influenced by the work of jazz legend Cannonball Adderley, he first came to prominence as a member for nine years with Nat Adderley’s ensemble, and later with drummer Louis Hayes co-led the Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band.
He’s recorded more than 20 albums as a leader and more than 250 as a sideman. He teaches at William Paterson University and the Manhattan School of Music.
Herring will perform twice during his residency:
- Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at Arlyn’s Good Beer, 520 Hankey Ave, Bowling Green, with the BGSU Jazz Faculty.
- Thursday, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m. with Jazz Lab Band I, directed by Jeff Halsey, and Jazz Lab Band II, directed by Brad Billmaier, in Kobacker Hall on campus. The concert will feature music by Herring as well as compositions and arrangers by Herbie Hancock, Oliver Nelson, and Thad Jones. Tickets are $10. Click to purchase.
Herring will also present a master class Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in room 2121 of the Moore Musical Arts Center, and a Chamber Jazz Ensemble clinic, Thursday at 3 p.m. in Kobacker Hall.
