The 2022/2023 performance season features new and traditional symphonic works, famous ballets, world-renowned artists, and a new partnership with the Toledo Jazz Orchestra (TJO).
The Toledo Symphony celebrates its 79th season and Alain Trudel’s 5th season as Music Director. “I am overjoyed to return to Toledo this fall for my fifth season as Music Director of the Toledo Symphony,” says Trudel. “I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work alongside many talented people, form life-long friendships on and off stage, and engage in meaningful music-making experiences over the years. Cheers to five years together, it’s going to be the best one yet!”
Toledo Ballet celebrates its 83rd season and continues to present the longest-running, annual production of “The Nutcracker” in the nation. Professional dancer, educator, and choreographer Eric Otto was recently named Artistic Director & Head of Curriculum for the organization.
“In this new season as Artistic Director of Toledo Ballet, I look forward to the collaborative possibilities working with Alain and Toledo Symphony musicians,” says Otto. “It is so rare for a ballet school to perform with live music by professional musicians and I am so excited that our dancers and our audiences will have numerous opportunities to experience that.”
“A cornerstone of TAPA is the belief that we can do more together than apart. That’s the power of collaboration,” says Zak Vassar, President & CEO of TAPA. “We have worked with leaders of the Toledo Jazz Orchestra for a couple of years to explore ways that we could work together. They recently celebrated their 40th Anniversary and announced that evening the selection of Alain Trudel as the TJO’s next Artistic Director. This provides us with even more opportunities to work together, dream together, and build something beautiful for this community.”
TJO’s 2022/2023 season includes five big band performances, three of which Trudel will lead: Classics from the Great American Songbook (Nov. 17), A Swingin’ Christmas (Dec. 17), a celebration of Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn (Mar. 23), an evening with award-winning Matt Catingub (Apr. 8), and the Art of Art Tatum (May 6). The November performance will additionally feature dancers from Toledo Ballet.
“Both of my parents were jazz musicians. Some people may not know that jazz was my first love and the traditional music that my family was brought up in,” says Trudel. “I am really honored and excited to take on a leadership role together with the wonderful musicians of our very own Toledo Jazz Orchestra this season.”
Since 1979, the TJO has worked with dozens of industry legends, including Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, Clark Terry, and Zoot Sims. The group also performs the works of the major big bands from the past eight decades, along with arrangements commissioned specifically for the orchestra.
“We look forward to expanding our audiences through the marketing efforts of TAPA,” says Scott Potter, President of the TJO Board of Directors. “Alain has an artistic vision for the TJO and we are eager to begin working with him. This season presents some very challenging yet rewarding music that I think Toledo is going to love.”
