Six-week Constitution 101 class to be taught by Judge Reger

Wood County Courthouse

(Submitted by Constitution 101)

The second class of Constitution 101, taught by Wood County Common Pleas Judge Matt Reger, begins Thursday, Oct. 3 at the Wood County District Public Library. It runs from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Once again this will be a six week class.  Participants receive a binder of materials, readings, and links to various resources. We’re currently informing interested participants to sign up for the class by Sept. 20. The class will be capped at 20 participants as a way to further discussion and sharing.

We know schedules vary and change. However, we can assure you that content and peer continuity will be enhanced should your schedule, if you sign up, permit you to attend most, if not all, of the six sessions. Below are the anticipated dates and session topics.

  • Oct. 3 – What are the philosophical and historical foundations of the American system of government?
  • Oct. 10 – How did the framers create the Constitution?  Marbury vs. Madison will be discussed.
  • Oct. 17 – How has the Constitution changed to further the ideals contained in the Declaration of Independence? The 13th – 15th Amendments as well as Palko vs. Connecticut, and Griswold vs. Connecticut may be on the agenda.
  • Oct. 24 – How have the values and principles embodied in the Constitution shaped American institutions and practices? Gibbons vs. Ogden as possible case.
  • Nov. 7 – What rights does the Bill of Rights protect? Exclusionary clause examined
  • Nov. 14 – What challenges might face American Constitutional Democracy in the 21st century? Civil Rights and Roe vs. Wade may be on the agenda.

To maximize participation should you enroll, please inform us which statement best matches your intentions. Once we have replies, you’ll be contacted with more specifics.
