State Highway Patrol investigates morning injury accident on I-475 exit ramp to U.S. 23

The Toledo Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating an injury crash that occurred today (Aug. 14) at approximately 10:05 a.m.

The crash occurred on the Interstate 475 westbound exit ramp to U.S. 23 northbound in Sylvania Township, Lucas County.

Qualid Maafa, 54, of Indianapolis, Indiana, was driving a 2022 Freightliner commercial truck and trailer westbound on the Interstate 475 exit ramp to U.S. 23 northbound. Maafa was driving too fast for the curve, lost control of his semi-truck, went off the left side of the roadway, struck a guardrail, and overturned. When the semi-truck overturned, it blocked the entire ramp closing the roadway.

Maafa suffered minor injuries and was treated on scene by medical personnel. He was cited with reckless operation. Safety belts and impaired driving do not appear to be a factor in this crash, and the crash remains under investigation.

Maafa was hauling paper products, and there are no environmental concerns stemming from the crash.

The Interstate 475 westbound exit ramp to U.S. 23 northbound remains closed as crews clear the scene.

The patrol was assisted by the Sylvania Township Police Department, the Ohio Department of Transportation, Wright’s Towing and Recovery, and Sylvania Township Fire.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reminds motorists to always wear safety belts and to never drive impaired or distracted.
