An Ohio State Patrol chase this morning ended just south of Bowling Green, with the driver reportedly fleeing on foot, and a patrol vehicle being hit by a semi truck.
Bowling Green Police officers apprehended the suspect near County Home Road.
At 6:36 a.m., a Lima state patrol post trooper attempted a traffic stop on a Hyundai Elantra for reportedly driving 86 mph in a 70 mph zone on Interstate 75 northbound in Allen County. The vehicle failed to stop and a vehicle pursuit ensued.
The pursuit was terminated near County Road 99 in Hancock County as it entered a road construction work zone. Troopers re-engaged in pursuit of the vehicle once it was out of the work zone.
Troopers conducted a rolling road block (boxed the vehicle in) near Ohio 613 where the suspect vehicle briefly stopped, but reportedly fled again.
At 6:58 a.m., the suspect vehicle pulled into the rest area just south of U.S. 6 in Wood County and crashed in the north side of the parking lot. The driver allegedly fled on foot. A trooper was attempting to enter the northbound on-ramp from the rest area when his Dodge Charger patrol car was struck by a northbound semi-tractor trailer.
The suspect, identified as Jaevon L. Johnson, 22, Detroit, was apprehended by BGPD Lt. Dan Mancuso and Lt. Adam Skaff. Johnson did not resist arrest, Skaff said.
Both the semi-driver and the trooper were transported to the Wood County Hospital by ambulance with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.
Johnson was determined to be impaired and suspected drugs were located in his vehicle. Johnson was incarcerated at the Wood County Jail for failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, a felony of the third degree. Additional charges are pending.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Bowling Green Police Division, Hancock County Sheriff’s Office and the Wood County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident remains under investigation.
