Toledo Museum of Art to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day with ‘Strength in Unity’ celebration

The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day by opening its doors on Monday, Jan. 19, and hosting a daylong celebration titled, “Strength in Unity.” Typically closed on Mondays, TMA will open from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. to honor King’s legacy through community, reflection, and the collective power of coming together.

Visitors will have the opportunity to connect with their community and celebrate shared history through the day’s schedule of events. The community is invited to join for a keynote event that aims to inspire in the Little Theater by Dr. Maurice Stinnett, a performance by BGSU Voices, and creative, family-friendly activities led by the Family Center and Outreach team.

The full schedule of events for TMA’s 2026 MLK Day Celebration is as follows:

  • Family Center activities: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Family Center
  • Outreach activities: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Green Room
  • Welcome and introduction: 11:30 a.m., Little Theater
  • BGSU Voices: 11:35 a.m., Little Theater
  • Dr. Stinnett keynote: 11:45 a.m., Little Theater
  • Spoken word performance: 12:30 p.m., Little Theater
  • Closing and announcements: 12:40 p.m., Little Theater

Grace Toth, the Emma Leah Bippus Director of Education at TMA, emphasized TMA’s ongoing commitment to honor King’s legacy through such events.

“At the Toledo Museum of Art, we believe art has the power to inspire dialogue, reflection, and unity,” Toth said. “Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an important tradition for us, because it celebrates Dr. King’s legacy and reinforces our shared commitment to equity and justice. This year’s theme, “Strength in Unity,” invites our community to come together through art, conversation, performance, and family-friendly experiences. We welcome everyone to honor Dr. King’s vision through community, reflection, and the collective power of unity.”
