Wellness Fair at senior center to focus on healthy minds, bodies and souls

In honor of Older Americans Month, the Wood County Committee on Aging, 140 S. Grove St., Bowling Green, will be celebrating active and healthy lifestyles. On Monday, May 12, from 1 to 4 p.m., the event will explore a variety of health focused booths, classes, and hands-on learning opportunities to enhance your overall health journey.

Vendors included but not limited to are: Alzheimer’s Association of NWO, Heritage Corner Health Care Campus, Maurer Family Cancer Care Center, MemoryLane Care Services, NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Wood County, Ohio Living Home Health and Hospice, Ohioans Home Health Care and Hospice, Safe Communities of Wood County, The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio, The Willows of Bowling Green, Wood County Health Department, Wood County Hospital, Wood County Veterans Service Office, Wood Haven Health Care, and more.

Featured educational sessions include:

Holistic and Non-Traditional Pain Management – 1:30 p.m. in the dining room. Dr. Cody Estrel, a chiropractor at Falcon Health Center, will present a session on chiropractic care like cupping, dry needling, and TENS can help alleviate pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall well-being.

Commercialized Medications and Their Impact on Your Health – 2:30 p.m. in the dining room, featuring Kathleen Ballard, a pharmacist at Wood County Hospital.

Are you curious about the medications frequently advertised on TV, like Prevagen, Wegovy, Ozempic, or Saxenda? Come learn more about the complexities of these medications, including their side effects, costs, and long-term effects.

Healthy Eating and Cooking Tips – 3:30 p.m. in the dining room, featuring Katlin Medjesky, Community Outreach Coordinator at the Wood County Health Department.

Learn practical tips for healthy cooking at home, with a focus on adding more veggies, choosing no-fuss proteins, and making smart substitutions for better nutrition. This presentation is designed to help older adults enjoy simple, satisfying meals that support long-term health.

The wellness fair will also have featured breakout sessions, including:

Getting the Most Out of Your Electronic Medical Records – 1 p.m. in Room 203/204, featuring Amanda Wickard, HIMS Director at Wood County Hospital. This session is designed to empower you with the knowledge to successfully navigate your health information. See real-life examples and explore tools to help you stay informed.

Fall Prevention Methods – 2 p.m. in Room 203/204. Join a Wood County Hospital physical therapist who will share practical strategies and expert advice to prevent falls and recover safely should they occur.

Healthy Living for Your Brain & Body – 3 p.m. in Room 203/204, featuring Dakota Stone, from the Alzheimer’s Association. Learn more about proactive steps you can take to maintain a healthy brain and body while reducing the risk of dementia.

Screenings: Hearing screenings provided by BGSU Speech and Language Department, Wood County Health Department’s mobile unit outside the building will provide blood pressure, blood sugar, respiration, and tobacco cessation information.

A table inside the building will offer a notary for the signing of a living will or power of attorney documentation.
