Before the election in 2024, congress had put together a bipartisan border bill with most of the reforms that the Republicans asked for. It was touted as the best bill in decades. Then Trump ordered them to vote against it, because what else could he campaign on beside the cost of eggs? So every one of them, including Bob Latta voted against the bill.
Once in office, Trump began the large scale effort to defund agencies. Only Congress has the right to change the funding. Many of these efforts were taken to the courts and several were called out as being illegal by the courts. Where were Bob and the other Republican congressmen when this happened? Why did they remain silent in this overreach of the executive branch?
Where is the outcry from these representatives when massive layoffs of federal employees in departments such as Veterans Affairs, Department of Education and Social Security (to name but a few) laid off thousands of people at the urging of DOGE? Do they realize or care what is happening to their constituents? I believe they do realize and that is why Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, told them to not hold town hall meetings. And so, most of them refuse to hold them. Do they care? If they do, why have they capitulated to this administration and DOGE to the detriment of the people they are called upon to represent?
The only courageous action we have seen in these circumstances is from the courts.
