William “Bill” Gamble, 87, of Bowling Green, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at the Bridge Hospice Care Center, Bowling Green, OH. He was born on March 9, 1929, to the late Rev. William and Elizabeth (Dyke) Gamble in New Castle, PA. Bill married Janet Sawdy on August 14, 1976, in Arlington, VA and she survives. Bill is also survived by his sons: William Gamble of AZ and Robert Gamble of FL and daughters: Julie Gamble Vannurden of Ludowici, GA and Shauna (Mike) Blevins of Findlay, OH. Also surviving are his sisters: Mildred Parker of Orlando, FL, Ruth Shaffer of New Castle, PA, and Peg (Ken) Lutz of New Castle, PA; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his sister Esther Gamble and brothers-in-law: William Parker and Richard Shaffer.
Bill joined the Navy at age 17 and after his stent in the Navy joined the Army. After the Army he worked in Radio Broadcasting in numerous states, which led him to the government radio station The Voice of America in Washington, DC. Bill spent his final 2 years with The Voice of America in Greece before retirement. Upon retirement Bill and the family moved to Bowling Green, OH, where he held numerous jobs in the community. His jobs included being manager at Uptown/Downtown, campaign manager for Mayor Wes Hoffman, pro shop manager at BG Country Club, and wine sales at BG Beverage. A proud accomplishment in Bill’s life was working alongside Dick Marten on the Stone Ridge Golf Club and making that dream a reality. This short list of things does not begin to touch the impact and work that Bill has done in the Bowling Green community.
Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bowling Green, where he was involved with numerous groups and activities. Bill was also a member of the Maumee Bowling Green Elks, VFW, Pemberville American Legion, the Zenobia Shrine, Presidents Club and Falcon Club at BGSU.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 5, 2016, at Dunn Funeral Home, located in the Historical District of Bowling Green at 408 West Wooster Street. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church, 1526 East Wooster Street in Bowling Green. Pastor Chris Walter and Pastor Amy Miller will officiate. A luncheon will be held at the church immediately following the service.
