25 previously uncounted COVID deaths add up to 192 deaths in Wood County since March

With previously uncounted COVID deaths added in, Wood County is now reporting a total of 192 deaths from COVID since March – including a woman in her 20s.

An additional 25 deaths were reported today, with six of those occurring in November, 18 in December, and one in January. 

Of the total 192 deaths, one was in her 20s, one was in his 30s, three were in their 40s, six were in their 50s, 18 were in their 60s, 44 in their 70s, 73 in their 80s, and 45 in their 90s, and one in her 100s. 

Wood County is now up to 11,268 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 since March, according to the Tuesday, Feb. 16, update from the Wood County Health Department. That is 139 more cases than on Thursday, Feb. 11.

The number of doses of the COVID vaccine being given in Wood County as of Tuesday is 15,955 – which is 12.2% of the county’s population.

The number of active COVID cases in the county today is 90, which is 39 fewer than last Thursday. Active cases are Wood County residents who are being monitored by the health department according to state and federal isolation criteria.

A total of 552 local residents have been hospitalized for the coronavirus since March, with four more being hospitalized since Thursday. 

Of the total 11,268 cases in the county as of today, those with the virus ranged in age from 1 to 103, with the median age of 39. Of those testing positive, 5,888 were female, and 5,380 were male. 

Cases involving BGSU students and staff who live in surrounding counties and commute are included in BGSU figures, but not Wood County’s total count.

Every Thursday, the Wood County Health Department lists “active cases” by ZIP codes. As of last week, there are 18 areas in the county with active cases.

The Perrysburg ZIP code area again had the most this week, with 41-45 active cases. Next was Bowling Green, with 36-40 active cases, followed by Rossford with 6-10 active cases. 

Areas with 1-5 cases each included Bloomdale, Bradner Fostoria, Grand Rapids, Haskins, Luckey, Millbury, Northwood, Pemberville, Risingsun, Rudolph, Tontogany, Walbridge, Wayne and Weston.

The latest numbers reported for schools (week of Feb. 1) in the county included 16 students and 4 staff: 

  • Bowling Green City Schools: 0 students, 1 staff.
  • Northwood: 1 student, 0 staff.
  • Penta Career Center: 2 students, 0 staff.
  • Perrysburg: 12 students, 2 staff.
  • Rossford: 1 student, 0 staff.
  • Wood County ESC: 0 students, 1 staff.

Of the total COVID cases in Wood County, at least 864 have been in long-term care facilities – 449 were residents and 415 were staff. Those numbers from long-term care facilities are updated every Thursday.

According to the Ohio Department of Health, at least 104 of Wood County’s deaths from COVID-19 have occurred in long-term care facilities.
