Wood County Health Department, in collaboration with Bowling Green City Schools, worked on an Anti-Vaping Video Contest held at Crim Elementary. All 108 fourth and fifth grade students participated, using their creativity to advocate for healthier, vape-free lifestyles.
Students first learned about the risks of nicotine and vaping through an evidence-based curriculum presented by Health Department staff. Working in small groups, they then created original videos to share what they learned and encourage peers to make informed choices.
Sixteen videos were submitted, and first, second and third place winners were honored with awards and prizes at Crim’s awards ceremony on May 30. The day before, a celebration event recognized the hard work of all participating students while reinforcing the information they learned in the program.
Crim’s staff played a key role in supporting this project, helping guide students through every step—from planning to production. The initiative promoted youth-led advocacy and highlighted the power of student voices in public health.
“This project gave students the tools to speak out and support their peers in making healthy decisions,” said Katlin Medjesky, Wood County Health Department community outreach coordinator. “It’s a great example of youth-driven prevention in action.”
A total of 16 videos were submitted, each showcasing the students’ unique perspectives and messaging. Judges selected first, second and third place winners, and those students were honored with awards and prizes during the school’s award ceremony held on May 30.
This contest not only educated students on the risks of vaping but also gave them the tools to influence positive change among their peers—demonstrating the power of youth when given the opportunity to lead.
