On their journey from the west coast to New York City, firefighters from the San Francisco Bay area stopped by Bowling Green Fire Division to be treated to a cookout at the fire station Monday evening.
This is the third trip for the bicyclists on the “Bay to Brooklyn” trek. They rode cross country on the 10th and 20th anniversaries of 9/11, and are now making the 25th anniversary ride.
The purpose of the ride is to remember the 343 firefighters who died at Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2001, and those who have died since then due to the post 9/11 conditions, plus the thousands of military personnel who have given their lives since then.
A total of 22 firefighters left the San Francisco Bay area on Aug. 2. They plan to ride their bicycles to Ground Zero and then on to the Brooklyn Bridge.
As the group traveled the nation five years ago, they also stopped for a meal with Bowling Green firefighters. Following is a story from that visit:
