More than 11,000 shelf-stable meals boxed up for local seniors

In less than two hours this morning, 800 boxes of canned foods were packed up to send out to homes of Wood County senior citizens.

“I seriously thought we’d be here till 4 o’clock,” Wood County Committee on Aging Executive Director Denise Niese said as she watched volunteers wrap up the packing before lunchtime.

The WCCOA – in addition to delivering meals to 800 seniors a day – has been charged with providing those citizens two weeks worth of shelf-stable meals during the coronavirus pandemic.

That meant 11,200 boxes had to be filled this morning with soup, tuna, peaches, pork and beans, apple juice, corn, crackers, oatmeal, mandarin oranges, Chex mix, and toilet paper.

About two dozen volunteers worked in the Junior Fair Building in Bowling Green to box up the food.

The meals will be delivered next week by City of Bowling Green employees and Ohio State Patrol troopers.

“The communities are really stepping up,” Niese said.
