Dr. Neil A. Englehart, chair and professor in the Bowling Green State University Department of Political Science, passed away on Saturday, May 2.

President Rodney Rogers made the announcement in a statement to the BGSU community.

Englehart was internationally known as an expert on comparative politics, international relations and Southeast Asia.

He was married to Dr. Melissa Miller, also on the political science faculty at BGSU. Condolences to Dr. Miller, also a professor in political science, and their sons can be sent to sympathy@bgsu.edu and we will deliver them.

Englehart was a frequent presenter and author on articles about human rights, state formation and state capacity, most often sharing his scholarly research from Burma/Myanmar, Thailand and Afghanistan. He also was well-known for his knowledge about North Korea.

He joined the BGSU faculty in 2005 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 2007 and full professor in 2018. He served in many leadership positions at the University including chair of the department since 2011, and as a member and leader on numerous committees at the University and college level.

He was a teacher known for his interrogative teaching style that encouraged his students to think critically.

“We mourn his loss and share in his family and friends’ sorrow,” Rogers wrote.

Counselors are available to help the campus community cope with this loss. Students may contact the BGSU Counseling Center at 419-372-2081 to be connected directly with a counselor. Faculty and staff may receive support through the University’s Employee Assistance Program.

A public memorial service will be held once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. “Let us find comfort and inspiration in Dr. Englehart’s teaching and leadership legacy,” Rogers concluded. “Please continue to keep his family and friends in your thoughts during this difficult time.”
