Wood County recorded 397 more cases and one more death from COVID since the new year began. The county is now up to 8,705 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 since March, according to the Monday, Jan. 4, update from the Wood County Health Department.
The number of active COVID cases in the county is now 464, which is 82 more than on Thursday. Active cases are Wood County residents who are being monitored by the health department according to state and federal isolation criteria.
A total of 457 local residents have been hospitalized for the coronavirus since March, with five more being hospitalized since Thursday.
The county has recorded a total of 147 deaths from COVID, with one more in the past day. Of those, one was in his 30s, two were in their 40s, four were in their 50s, 14 were in their 60s, 29 in their 70s, 60 in their 80s, and 36 in their 90s, and one in her 100s.
Of the total 8,705 cases in the county as of today, those with the virus ranged in age from 1 to 103, with the median age of 39. Of those testing positive, 4,541 were female, and 4,164 were male.
Cases involving BGSU students and staff who live in surrounding counties and commute are included in BGSU figures, but not Wood County’s total count.
Every Wednesday, the Wood County Health Department lists “active cases” by ZIP codes. As of last week, there were 25 areas in the county with active cases.
The Perrysburg ZIP code area again had the most this week, with 106-110 active cases. Next was Bowling Green, with 86-90 active cases.
Northwood and Rossford were the next highest with 16-20 active cases each. North Baltimore, Walbridge and Wayne each had 11-15 cases.
Areas with 6-10 cases each included Fostoria, Grand Rapids, Millbury and Weston.
Areas with 1-5 cases each included Bloomdale, Bradner, Cygnet, Deshler, Haskins, Hoytville, Jerry City, Luckey, Milton Center, Pemberville, Portage, Risingsun, Rudolph and Tontogany.
The latest numbers reported for schools (week of Dec. 21) in the county included 10 students and 5 staff:
- Bowling Green City Schools: 2 students, 1 staff.
- Elmwood: 4 students, 1 staff.
- Rossford: 2 students, 0 staff.
- St. Aloysius: 2 students, 3 staff.
Of the total COVID cases in Wood County, at least 790 have been in long-term care facilities – 428 were residents and 362 were staff. Those numbers from long-term care facilities are updated every Wednesday.

- St. Clare Commons, Perrysburg: 2 residents, 5 staff.
- Grand Rapids Care Center: 2 residents, 9 staff.
- Briar Hill Health Campus, North Baltimore: 47 residents, 31 staff.
- Brookdale Bowling Green: 20 residents, 14 staff.
- Wood Lane Residential Werner House: 3 residents, 2 staff.
- Wood Haven Health Care: 2 residents, 12 staff.
- Waterford at Levis Commons: 13 residents, 10 staff.
- Bowling Green Manor: 76 residents, 47 staff.
- Waterford at Levis Commons: 12 residents, 8 staff.
- Wood Lane Residential Dunn House: 6 residents, 5 staff.
- Wood Lane Residential Rollie Hampton House: 1 resident, 1 staff.
- Wood Lane Residential Schult House: 6 residents, 5 staff.

- Wood County Residential Restle House: 1 resident; 1 staff.
According to the Ohio Department of Health, at least 101 of Wood County’s deaths from COVID-19 have occurred in long-term care facilities.
