The week of Sept. 12-18 is Direct Support Professional Appreciation Week. Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are pillars of support within the community and play an essential role in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
DSPs assist individuals with daily living tasks, participate in employment, and help them become integrated and engaged members in the community. There are approximately 40 provider agencies and an additional 40 Independent providers serving people who live in Wood County.
DSP professionals create lasting bonds and make a difference in the lives of those they serve. As Kim Paxton, an individual who utilizes DSP services, shared, “My provider encourages me to do things that interest me. They provide transportation and help make sure I get to do the things that I want. They help me stay involved in our community.”
While this job is rewarding, it also comes with a unique set of challenges. Now more than ever, the Wood County DSPs deserve recognition and support as they continue to navigate a post-covid world.
“DSPs provide essential services within our community and are the unsung heroes within the I/DD field. They provide a crucial foundation of support and empowerment for the people we serve and are a critical part of our system” said Brent Baer, superintendent of Wood County Board of DD.
Wood County Board of DD will be distributing tokens of appreciation to Wood County DSPs throughout the week as a gesture of gratitude for the important work they do within the community. Anyone with a desire to make a difference in the community, who enjoys person-centered work, may want to consider becoming a DSP.
