Thomas Newby

Thomas E. Newby, 81, of Bowling Green passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2023.

Thomas was born on November 27, 1942 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Edward and Frances (Baker) Newby. He married Melva Carpenter on March 28, 1964 and she preceded him in death on March 2, 1985. Tom then married Bonnie (Ruffert) Smith on September 12, 1987 and she survives in Bowling Green. Tom is survived by his son Jeff (Carrie) Newby; step-children: Mary Beth (Jeff) Smith-Gunn, Marcia (Chuck) Grizzard, Matthew (Lori) Smith, Michael (Linda) Smith and Mark (Theresa) Smith; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his brothers John and William Newby.

Tom was a 1961 graduate of Bowling Green High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army as a medic for the 3rd Armor Division. Tom upon returning from the army worked as Electrician for the IBEW Local 8 and was fifty-year member. Tom was also a member of the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Bowling Green. Tom owned and operated Newby Photography, sharing his artistic ability with weddings and portraits. Tom also enjoyed wood working, making many items for his grandchildren. Tom was an avid collector of stamps. Tom and Bonnie enjoyed traveling the United States. They had the opportunity to visit all 50 states, Israel and Germany.

Visitation for Tom will be on Friday, December 15, 2023 from 4:00-7:00 PM in the Deck-Hanneman Funeral Home & Crematory, 1460 W. Wooster St., Bowling Green, Ohio 43402. Tom’s Celebration of Life Service will be on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 10:00 AM in the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 315 S. College Dr., Bowling Green, Ohio 43402. Inurnment with Military honors will follow in the New Belleville Ridge Cemetery, Dowling. Tom’s Services will be livestreamed on the Hanneman Family Funeral Home Facebook page.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Tom’s honor to American Diabetes Association or to the American Cancer Society.
