Alta Marie (Baker) Codding, 94, of Bowling Green, Ohio, passed away November 22, 2023. She was born May 25, 1929 in Shelby, Ohio to the late Best and Nina (Gutshall) Baker.
Alta came to Bowling Green in 1947 to attend BGSU where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education. While attending BGSU, Alta found her husband to be. Alta Marie Baker and Charles L. Codding were married on June 24, 1950 in Shelby, Ohio and were married for 52 years until his passing in 2003. After a couple of moves facilitated by the Navy, they returned to Bowling Green where they settled together, living and raising a family on West Wooster for over 60 years.
Alta was in 4-H and modeled at the Ohio State Fair. She was a member of Alpha Delta Gamma, Sigma Rho Tau and Gamma Theta Upsilon at BGSU. She was a Girl Scout Leader for 5 years, a Volunteer at Wood County Hospital and 30+ years for the Wood County Jail Library. She was an avid Bridge player and a prolific quilter, making quilts for family members and donating to the Veteran’s Home in Cincinnati as well as the Cocoon Shelter. She was also an avid genealogist. She enjoyed attending many activities at BGSU. Alta and Chuck sponsored many foreign exchange students and families. Many of which she has stayed in contact with, even traveling to Germany to spend a month with one.
She was very proud to teach her grandchildren the U.S. Presidents IN ORDER- earning them extra credit points in History Class. Alta was an election poll worker for 23 years, worked BGSU book-rush for 34 years, and bowled in a Tuesday women’s league. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church for 70+ years.
She is survived by her children Marsha Cuckler (Brett) of Pittsburgh, PA, David Codding (Lisa) of Bowling Green, Janet Hammersmith (Tim) of Bowling Green and Charles Codding (Jennifer) of Bowling Green, grandchildren Katie Abar (Jody) of Bluffton, SC, Laura Cerveny (Tim) of Bowling Green, Michael Codding (Jackie) of Bowling Green, Kyle Hammersmith (Samantha) of Bowling Green, Kelsey Carter (Nolan) of Findlay, Ohio, Andrew Codding attending Harvard University and Samantha Codding attending THE Ohio State University. She is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren with 1 great-grandchild on the way as well as 6 nieces & nephews, 15 great-nieces and nephews and 4 great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles and sister Marjorie Grant.
Visitation will be held on Thursday November 30, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Dunn Funeral Home, located in the Historical District of Bowling Green at 408 W. Wooster St. Her funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Interment will be private at Oak Grove Cemetery.
