Anti-hazing bill, Collin’s Law, passes Ohio Senate

Memorial to Stone Foltz left outside the former Pi Kappa Alpha house on the BGSU campus.

Collin’s Law, legislation that would make hazing a felony and addresses how higher education deals with it, unanimously passed the Ohio State Senate today (June 16).

The bill is sponsored by State Sen. Stephanie Kunze, R-Hilliard, and State Sen. Theresa Gavarone, R-Bowling Green. The bill now moves to the House.

A similar bill in the House HB310, which additionally addressed bullying in K-12, passed the House last session, but stalled out in Senate committee.

The bill is named for Collin Wiant who died in a hazing incident at Ohio University in 2018. It’s passage gained added impetus after the death in March of Bowling Green State University sophomore Stone Foltz in an alleged hazing incident.
