Artist’s manipulation of Hollywood images on view at River House Arts

From RIVER HOUSE ARTS

Lane Cooper  will exhibit new works in “Life Jacket,” an exhibit that will open Friday, Oct. 8, in the River House Arts Gallery, 425 Jefferson St., in downtown Toledo.

An opening reception in the main gallery on first floor of the Secor Building will be held Friday, Oct. 8, from 5-8 p.m.

In her ongoing series, “Dream House” and “Strong Female Lead”, familiar images of 20th Century film and television are fragmented by multiple layers of color and line. The visages are recognizable but interrupted by what could be digital glitches – an effect offset by the physical qualities of the work – or a gap between a public image and a crackling interior life.

Cooper herself has said the works seek to evoke a vague space between wakefulness and dreaming.

The artist is currently head of painting at the Cleveland Institute of Art. She holds an MFA in Painting and an MA in Contemporary Art History from the University of Alabama. Her works have appeared in exhibitions across the Southern US, in Canada, Europe, and New York.

Online viewing via Artsy begins Oct. 9. The exhibition runs through Nov. 13.

Theo Brooks’ ‘Ritual Relations’ extended

Theo Brooks’ exhibit of glass works, “Ritual Relations,” has been extended through Nov. 1. The work is on view on the second floor gallery.

Inspired by his Cypriot background, the artist has reimagined and reinvented works reminiscent of ancient artifacts and ritual objects that “could be objects of ‘contemporary antiquity’ and ceremonially used by an unknown past or future culture.”  The carefully arranged, exquisitely sculpted glass objects create a  haunting, immersive experience.

Brooks received his MFA from Bowling Green State University in Spring, 2021.
