BG City Council adopts resolution honoring Neocles Leontis

Neocles Leontis, accompanied by his wife Vassiliki, was sworn in as council member by Judge Mark Reddin in January.

Bowling Green City Council adopted a resolution Monday evening honoring Neocles Leontis, who died on Dec. 8.

The resolution reads:

“Neocles B. Leontis honorably and faithfully served the citizens of the City of Bowling Green as council member at-large throughout 2020 and this Council seeks, posthumously, to recognize his contributions as a member of Council and the Bowling Green community.

“Dr. Leontis was a man of unique and special qualities who had many impressive accomplishments in his life including, but not limited to, degrees from Ohio State University, Harvard Graduate School, and Yale University, and was a professor of chemistry at Bowling Green State University since 1987 and during his tenure, made significant contributions to the field of biochemistry and was a well-respected teacher and mentor who engaged his students in issues both in and beyond the classroom.

“It was with this impressive background along with a commitment to serve and improve the Bowling Green community that he was elected to this Council and engaged energetically in important matters facing this legislative body and our community.

“Dr. Leontis shared his insight and intelligence on a variety of matters with this group and utilized his research skills to be well-informed to help educate others on various items being discussed and debated including issues related to quality of life and the regulation of rental properties, sustainability, and health matters relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Serving as chairperson of the Council’s Public Utilities Committee was a fitting role for Dr. Leontis as he had extensive knowledge and interest in the area and his long-term advocacy for sustainable and responsible energy practices and this work and commitment to the environment – from what citizens can do every day to the governance policies – were valued and respected.

“Dr. Leontis also served on the Transportation and Safety and the Community Improvement Committees and actively contributed to the numerous issues encountered in our community and by this Council in the tumultuous year of 2020.

“This Council mourns Dr. Leontis’ untimely death and sends sincere condolences to his many friends, students and colleagues, and most especially to his family including his wife Vassiliki, daughters Evangelia and Natalia, and sister Artemis.

“The Council of the City of Bowling Green, on behalf of the government and the citizens of this municipality, does hereby posthumously recognize Dr. Neocles Leontis for his dedicated service, meritorious achievements, and noteworthy performance of civic duty while a member of the City Council.”
