BG City hires forensic specialist after personal information emailed to all internal employees

The City of Bowling Green recently experienced a cybersecurity incident when an email containing personal identifiable information was delivered erroneously to all internal city email addresses, Municipal Administrator Lori Tretter stated today.

Upon discovery, the city immediately pulled back the email and engaged forensic specialists in cybersecurity and data privacy to investigate further. The investigation determined the potential for third party access – although no instances of fraud or identity theft have been detected to date, Tretter said.

Additionally, as part of the ongoing process, the city has engaged with a law firm specializing in cybersecurity and data privacy to identify legal requirements and provide all appropriate notifications. To that end, the city is mailing letters and offering to provide credit monitoring services at no charge to those individuals who may have been impacted, Tretter said.
