BG City Schools adapts tech to keep ‘unwelcome guests’ from classes

Bowling Green Middle School

A couple Bowling Green Middle School classes were interrupted Tuesday by someone infiltrating the classes.

Bowling Green Superintendent Francis Scruci stressed that the district was not hacked – but rather a couple classes were interrupted with an inappropriate word on the screen and loud music.

Initially it was believed that some students may have given their class credentials to someone else who then infiltrated the classes.

However, it now appears that a couple students logged in as themselves and also as other people, Scruci said.

“We think it’s our kids creating fictitious accounts, logging on and doing stupid things,” Scruci said Thursday afternoon.

The problems appear to have been isolated to the Middle School.

According to a letter emailed to principals from BGCS technology coordinator Beth Krolak, the district has now turned off the phone and PIN options, so students now join classes via Google accounts. This will allow faculty to manage who joins in, and permit teachers to kick off “unwelcome guests” who use email accounts to join.
