BG Councilman Bruce Jeffers running for county commissioner

Bruce Jeffers

Bowling Green City Councilman Bruce Jeffers formally announced Monday that he is running for Wood County Commissioner in 2020.

“We need to make sure we’re committed to smart growth, which doesn’t just involve economic development,” Jeffers said.  “It also means not letting important responsibilities like road and bridge maintenance, and drainage fall through the cracks. I will make sure Wood County is a strong partner for our municipalities and townships as we work to achieve these goals.”

Jeffers will seek the commissioner seat commencing Jan. 3, 2021.

“The years I’ve spent educating the adolescents of Wood County is one of my life’s proudest achievements.”  Jeffers continued, “And it has also been a pleasure to serve those students by advocating for their future through public service. As commissioner, that’s something I will continue to do by focusing on issues like soil and water conservation, poverty, and workforce development. I will continue to emphasize the importance of welcoming all sources of labor to fill jobs that are currently going unfilled and promoting college and vocational training that will help young people get hired in both the types of jobs we have now and the types we will bring in the future.”

Jeffers was first elected to Bowling Green City Council in 2011. He recently retired from Otsego High School after 35 years of teaching. Jeffers holds a bachelor’s degree in religion and mathematics and also earned a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Toledo where he focused on planning and the needs of residents in rural areas.

Jeffers is also a horticulturalist who grew up on a tree farm near Fostoria, where he helped his father develop the “Jeffersred” hybrid maple, a popular shade tree in the U.S.
