The start of the year for Bowling Green FFA means the start of career development events. The first one this year was soil judging. The chapter took seven members to the district ag soil judging contest in Henry County. The members included Aiden Thomas, Casey Naus, Annie Urban, Addie Naus, Laina Smeltz, Isabelle Grames, and Kylah Crawford. The team placed first and qualified for state. Annie Urban, Kylah Crawford and Isabelle Grames represented the chapter at the state contest on Oct. 12, and finished 43rd in the state.
The chapter ended the month of September with the Greenhand ceremonies. This is a ceremony in which the officers induct first-year members into the National FFA Organization. The chapter inducted 51 new members this year. This was also the first official meeting of the year. After the meeting, members and families were invited to the classroom, where they explored the organization and were introduced to the opportunities and activities that the BG FFA has to offer.
On Oct. 4, the annual fruit and nut sale was kicked off. BG FFA participates in this by selling various fruit, nut, meat, cheese, and barbecue sauce products. This sale is the only fundraiser the chapter does to raise money for the chapter’s necessities throughout the year. This year the sale is being done in a hybrid style where customers can order online or in person from a member.
On Oct. 7, the Bowling Green FFA hosted the Wood County Chapter Degree ceremonies. This year the ceremony was held at the Bowling Green Performing Arts Center. There were 29 BG FFA members who earned this degree. The chapter degree is the highest degree that a member can earn at the local chapter level. The degrees were presented by president Addie Naus and adviser Stephanie Conway.
Bowling Green FFA members Grace Hovest, Addie Naus, Grace O’Connell, Annie Urban, and Emma Nester participated in the county level job interview career development event competition in October. The job interview contest consisted of a member developing a cover letter and resume, filling out a job application, participating in a mock job interview, and writing a follow-up letter. Emma Nester placed fifth, Grace Hovest placed second, Grace O’Connell placed second, Addie Naus placed first and Annie Urban placed sixth. Grace Hovest, Grace O’Connell and Addie Naus will be going onto the district competition which takes place on Nov. 7.
