Bowling Green Police responded to Wood County Hospital Thursday evening after a woman brought her 4-year-old in injuries that were suspected to be caused by domestic violence.
The mother told police she left for work around 6 a.m., and left her children in the care of her boyfriend, Shawn Carnicom, 33. The couple and the children live on Buttonwood Avenue, but were staying at the Best Western hotel on East Wooster Street on Thursday.
The mother told police that when she returned from work around 6 p.m., her 4-year-old daughter had a fat lip. Her boyfriend reportedly told the mom that the child was having an allergic reaction from eating poppy seeds during breakfast.
The police report stated that despite Carnicom’s protests, the mother convinced him to take her to the hospital. Carnicom dropped off the mom and the 4-year-old, then left with the couple’s 11-month-old son.
Hospital staff contacted police after it was noticed that the daughter also had a bruise on her right ear and a lump on the right side of her head. According to the police report, hospital staff told officers the injuries were not consistent with an allergic reaction.
The 4-year-old told police that Carnicom was the only person watching her and the 11-month-old Thursday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. She reportedly told police that Carnicom had jumped on her head. The girl also reportedly told police that her “private area hurt.”
Wood County Children’s Services was notified and came to the hospital to speak with the mother and the child.
Police then passed on the information to other units about the vehicle Carnicom was driving. Carnicom had a suspended driver’s license.
According to the police report, the mother was able to contact Carnicom, who said he was driving to Columbus. Through the mom’s phone, police were able to track the area where Carnicom was located – which was on East Wooster Street in Bowling Green.
BGSU police spotted the car on Clough Street. The police report stated the mother was on the phone with Carnicom when the police cruiser came up behind him, and he told the mom he was going to “f****** kill her.”
Carnicom was arrested. The 11-month-old was not with him, and Carnicom told police he had dropped the child off at a home in Bloomdale. The Wood County Sheriff’s Office found the child at that location, and returned him to his mom.
Carnicom was arrested for felony domestic violence (second offense), aggravated menacing, drug abuse (marijuana), possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving under suspension.
According to the Bowling Green Municipal Court, Carnicom has a history of other offenses, including robbery, intimidation, disorderly conduct with persistence, resisting arrest and criminal trespassing.
