Bowling Green Parks and Recreation Department taught children this summer how to swim, bicycle safely, and how to enjoy nature.

Recreation Director Ivan Kovacevic reported on the summer camp programs and swimming lessons during a Parks and Recreation Board meeting on Tuesday.

A total of 423 children participated in summer camps this year, with an average of 87% capacity across the 25 camps offered.

Camp offerings included recreation, sports, nature, and Safety Town options. Camps were offered a variety of times including sessions that were morning only, afternoon only, and all day.

Some camps ran three days, four days, and others five days. Camp locations included City Park, the Community Center, Wintergarden Nature Preserve, and Kenwood Elementary.

At the city pool, 398 children participated in swimming lessons this past summer. Of the 39 sessions offered, the lessons reached 88% capacity.

Weather issues affected some park events this summer. Rain during two Lunches in the Park, and two Concerts in the Park, sent those events indoors to the atrium of the Veterans Building in City Park.

Rain also delayed the Pet Show by a week, but the show went on, Kovacevic reported.
