Bowling Green Police Division responded to a domestic in progress Sunday around 1 a.m., in the 300 block of East Merry Avenue.
Jay Joseph Stockwell, 47, of Bowling Green, was arrested for felony domestic violence and taken to the Wood County Justice Center.
When police arrived, they could hear yelling coming from inside the apartment, a sound like a loud slap, and a female scream. When an officer announced police presence and ordered someone to come to the door, police reportedly heard a man telling someone to not answer the door.
Stockwell opened the door and was taken outside the apartment. Inside, officers found a woman crying in the hallway. She had dried blood around her left ear and left neck area, a cut on her right foot, and a scratch near her right collar bone.
The woman told police she was scared to talk with Stockwell just outside the apartment. Police assured her that it was safe to speak with them.
The woman said Stockwell punched her in the head about 10 times. She ran into the bathroom and tried to lock the door, but Stockwell reportedly broke down the door. She said he then pushed her, causing her to fall onto the top of the toilet, hitting her head. The top of the toilet tank broke, leaving pieces of porcelain on the bathroom floor, which cut the woman’s foot.
The woman reportedly told police that they had previously responded to the apartment when Stockwell was punching her head, but she was too scared to tell police what was happening. At one point, she told police, “Thank you guys for coming because he probably would have killed me.”
Stockwell has a previous domestic violence conviction in Florida.
Police gave the woman a victims’ rights pamphlet. Bowling Green EMS checked on her injuries, but she did not want to go to the hospital.
