Bowling Green Police Division was called on a bogus robbery, but ended up arresting a Toledo man with several warrants, who fled in a stolen car and crashed near New Rochester.
On Sunday, at approximately 2:55 a.m., the Bowling Green Police Division responded to the area of Palmer and South Summit streets for a possible robbery that had just occurred.
As officers arrived in the area, a vehicle was observed leaving the scene at a high rate of speed. An officer attempted to stop the vehicle; however the driver reportedly failed to comply.
The suspect continued to flee from officers eastbound on U.S. 6. As the driver got to Ohio 199, the driver crashed the vehicle. Wood County Sheriff Deputies arrived on scene and assisted taking the suspect into custody. EMS responded to treat the driver and passenger for injuries.
During the investigation the vehicle was found to be stolen from Toledo and the driver had numerous warrants for his arrest. It was also determined that the suspect was not involved in the initial complaint regarding a possible robbery. The robbery complaint was also determined to be unfounded.
“It all worked out pretty well,” said Bowling Green Police Lt. Dan Mancuso.
Johnny Ray Hammons, 31, from Toledo, was arrested for failure to comply, receiving stolen property, DUS non-compliance, marked lanes violations, and fictitious plates. He was lodged in the Wood County Justice Center.
