The Bowling Green Police Division is investigating a report filed by a Bowling Green resident who was deceived into sending money to two individuals met on the internet. After receiving numerous requests and making several wire transfers, the victim refused to send any more funds. Subsequently, the victim received phone calls threatening to press charges of fraud and money laundering unless additional money was wired immediately.
One of the callers used a last name belonging to a Bowling Green Police Lieutenant and claimed to be calling from 175 W. Wooster St., which is the address of the Bowling Green Police Division. Members of the Bowling Green Police Division will not call authorizing citizens to participate in money transfers of any type.
Residents are reminded that anytime they receive a phone call or internet request to wire money, they should immediately be suspicious. Individuals should not provide any personal or bank information to unsolicited callers.
