BG woman charged with seventh drunk driving offense

A Bowling Green woman was charged with her seventh drunk driving offense last week after she reportedly crashed her vehicle on North Maple Street.

Bowling Green Police Division responded to a report of a non-injury accident Thursday around 10 p.m., and found a Chevy SUV in the middle of the roadway. The front left side of the vehicle had heavy damage, and it was apparent the vehicle struck an electric pole that had a large crack at the bottom of it.

Standing on the side of the road was Sophia Zamarripa, 40, of Bowling Green, who was reportedly stumbling and smelled of alcohol. According to the police report, Zamarripa had extremely slurred speech and was trying to talk on her phone with someone, but the voice was coming from the Bluetooth inside the vehicle.

Zamarripa reportedly told police she had consumed five shots of tequila.

The officer administered tests of walking, turning and balancing, with Zamarripa having difficulty with them all. She was placed under arrest for operating a vehicle while impaired.

After arriving at the police station, it was discovered that Zamarripa had six prior OVI convictions. She also had two additional OVI charges in Michigan.

She reportedly refused to allow a breath test on Thursday, so the police division petitioned for a blood search warrant. Zamarripa was taken to Wood County Hospital, where a blood sample was taken.

She was taken to Wood County Jail and charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, state OVI, failure to maintain reasonable control and driving while under a failure to reinstate suspension.

After review of Zamarripa’s CCH, BG police discovered she had an additional felony OVI that was held by Lucas County Sheriff`s Office and two additional OVI charges in Michigan.

The vehicle Zamarripa was driving sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene. The electric pole had to be repaired by the Bowling Green Electric Division.
