The Bowling Green Zoning Board of Appeals granted two variances Wednesday evening.

The Black Swamp Players requested a variance to allow for a larger sign, measuring 8 feet by 12 feet, on the exterior of the group’s theater at 115 E. Oak St.

Black Swamp Players has been a member of the community for 55 years, putting on more than 400 productions, and being the only non-profit art organization with a permanent structure.

The organization is dependent on ticket sales, a representative said, making a banner sign that changes with the season very valuable to the theater group.

The zoning board also granted a variance to the owners of a home in the 500 block of McKinley Drive, where the existing driveway was expanded 14 feet, encroaching into the side setback. The owners explained to the zoning board that their contractor had told them he would take care of the necessary permits. However, he failed to do so.

Bowling Green Planning Director Heather Sayler said the city has had repeated problems with this contractor not getting the proper permits. The board granted the variance, but also discussed the need to make sure contractors and developers follow rules.

City Council President Mark Hollenbaugh agreed.
