BGSU changes wellness day schedule for spring semester, spells out opening testing protocols

Bowling Green State University has announced procedures for the spring semester, including altering the wellness day schedule.

The change was announced in a message sent to faculty, staff, and students by President Rodney Rogers and Provost Joe Whitehead.

As first proposed, the four wellness days were spread throughout the semester, and spring break was eliminated. Under the new schedule the wellness days will be offered to create two long weekends, and another fifth day added. The new wellness day schedule is: Thursday, Feb. 18, and Friday, Feb. 19; Monday, March 22, and Tuesday, March 23; and Wednesday, April 21.

The change was made, the message said, after “feedback from our students.”

This will not alter when the semester begins and ends. Classes begin Jan. 11 and end with the last day of exams April 30.

BGSU is offering COVID testing for returning students living off-campus starting Jan. 5. The university has partnered with Vault Health to send at-home testing kits to residential students before they return to campus. Students will take these self-administered saliva PCR tests. Those who test positive will be asked to isolate and delay their return to campus.

“Students isolating and testing quickly should any symptoms develop, an exposure occur, or return from travel to a high positivity rate area will be key to our success in combating this virus,” the message said.

The university will continue its health protocols including requiring social distancing and face coverings on campus.

Classes will be again offered in three formats.

  • Hybrid courses have some students attending in person classes some sessions while attending virtually for other sessions.
  • Remote courses will be offered at a specific time with students attending virtually.Online courses are posted and may be attended at any time.
  • The message also states that faculty members are continuing to refine their course delivery in these three modes.

Residential students will be in single rooms or in some cases doubles with the roommates agreeing to behave as a household.

Student move-in will be spread out over five days.
