BGSU student dies in crash on U.S. 6

Bowling Green State University is mourning the death of third-year student David “Ryan” Walker, 20, of Vermilion. 

He was killed in a vehicle crash Sunday, Sept. 4, on U.S. 6 near mile marker 5 in Madison Township. Three other BGSU students were injured in the crash.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the vehicle Walker was a passenger in was struck head-on by a truck operated by James H. Baker Jr., 42, of Toledo.

Baker’s vehicle was eastbound when he traveled left of center as he attempted to pass several vehicles and struck two other westbound vehicles before colliding head on with a Ford sedan operated by Steven Iwanek, 20 of South Amherst. Iwanek is also a BGSU student as were two other passengers. All were transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Toledo.

In a statement to the campus community President Rodney Rogers wrote: “Ryan was a third-year student in the Allen W. and Carol M. Schmidthorst College of Business, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a specialization in accounting. In addition to his academic involvement, he was also a Thompson Working Families Scholar.

“Those who knew Ryan remember him as bright and humble, and someone who enjoyed his work – he just completed an internship with NASA this summer. We certainly mourn his tragic loss. Condolences to his family can be sent to sympathy@bgsu.edu, and we will deliver them.”
