Bowling Green businesses are being advised to not mistake “movie” money for the real stuff.
Within the past month, three local businesses have accepted $100 bills that are clearly marked as “for movie picture only use,” according to Bowling Green Police Lt. Dan Mancuso.
The bills appear real, but “people just aren’t looking at it” thoroughly enough to read the disclaimer, Mancuso said.
The $100 bills were passed at Walmart, Meijer and Big Lots.
As with all counterfeit money issues, the matter has been turned over to the Secret Service, Mancuso said.
Normally, people using counterfeit money use smaller denominations, since those are less likely to raise suspicion, he said.
“It goes in spurts. If we get a report from one business, we expect to see reports from others,” Mancuso said.
In the past, some counterfeit bills used at BG businesses have not even had the correct presidential picture on them.
“They just had a random picture,” Mancuso said.
He advised that clerks need to “actually look at it.” Special pens are also available that only show up on actual bills, or vice versa.
