The Bowling Green Parks and Recreation Department has announced the start of improvements to Carter Park’s Disc Golf Course funded by ARPA funds and a Visit BG grant for a total of $24,000 focusing on the following priorities:
- Safety: Many of the holes have fairways that overlap and can lead to dangerous crossing throws. The redesign will replace aging equipment, space out holes, and ensure safety around the new inclusive playground.
- Inclusivity: Multiple tee pads and locations will be established to ensure accessibility for new and experienced players.
- Attraction: High-caliber course improvements will allow for larger tournaments to be hosted at Carter Park, driving increased foot traffic to local businesses. Additionally, BGSU’s Top 10 Disc Golf Club Team will be able to hold regional conference events.
The Carter Park Disc Golf Course, established in 1995, has offered new and experienced disc golfers a place to enjoy the sport for over two decades. The wear and tear of nearly 25 years of use has led to deterioration of the course, and aging equipment and original course layout have created safety concerns.
In 2021, a group of friends banded together to form GAS Disc Golf, non-profit organization dedicated to growing the sport of disc golf in Northwest Ohio. Over the last six months, members of GASDG and BGSU’s Falcon Disc Golf Club have collaborated with Bowling Green Parks & Recreation and Visit BG to redesign the course to achieve the above listed priorities.
Nineteen new baskets have been ordered, along with new signage. The pouring of new tee pads and basket installation will begin the week of June 26. During development, disc golfers may continue to use the majority of the course. Visitors are reminded to provide space for active work crews on the course and to not disturb marking flags/stakes.
