The driver charged with aggravated vehicular homicide in the death of a bicyclist in Bowling Green on Saturday was driving with a suspended driver’s license and is suspected of being intoxicated at the time of the crash.

James Patrick Lindsay, 54, Dunbridge, is charged with driving off the roadway and striking a bicyclist who was on the sidewalk near the intersection of South Main Street and Pearl Street.

Michael Szabo, 60, Bowling Green, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

BGPD Lt. Adam Skaff said Monday morning that police suspected Lindsay of driving under the influence. Officers on the scene had Lindsay perform field sobriety tests, then asked the driver to do a breath test, which he refused to do, Skaff said.

According to the police report, there was an open alcohol beverage in the truck.

A search warrant was granted for a blood test, and Lindsay was taken to Wood County Hospital. The blood sample was sent off to a lab, and law enforcement is waiting for the results of that test, Skaff said.

Multiple witnesses reported to police that Lindsay tried to drive away from the crash scene, but was unable to move the truck.

Lindsay was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and was transported to the Wood County Jail.  This incident remains under investigation.
