Bowling Green Police Division responded Thursday to a car fire, reportedly started by a Roman candle firework.
The fire was reported at 10:21 p.m. by an 18-year-old in the parking lot of an auto parts store on South Main Street. When police arrived the teen was crying and said the burning vehicle was her car.
The police officer emptied his fire extinguisher, but it wasn’t enough to put out the flames. Bowling Green Fire Division arrived soon after and put the fire out.
The driver told police she was sitting in the parking lot waiting for a friend, when she called another friend to keep her company. Both of the teens sat in their own vehicles while talking. The female told police that her 16-year-old friend set off a firework from within his car toward the rear of hers. Soon after, her vehicle was on fire from the area where the firework was shot.
Another officer went to the home of the 16-year-old boy and asked him to describe what happened. The boy reportedly admitted discharging a Roman candle firework, and thought a spark had flown under the car, lighting it on fire.
The boy reportedly accepted full responsibility for the fire that destroyed the car.
Information was to be forwarded to the Wood County juvenile prosecutor for possible criminal charges.
