First courthouse falcon chick has arrived for 2023

The first of the 2023 Wood County Courthouse clocktower baby falcons has hatched.

The first falcon chick, or eyas, for 2023 hatched just after midnight Friday (May 12), according to Michael Bratton, manager of media relations at Bowling Green State University.

This marks the 13th consecutive year a pair of Peregrine Falcons have returned to the Wood County Courthouse in Bowling Green to hatch their young. This spring’s first egg was laid on Tuesday, April 4 at 12:21 a.m.

The university, with Peregrine Falcons as its mascot, and Wood County Commissioners established a partnership in 2015 to provide a webcam to view the nesting falcons. The birds’ appearance in the courthouse clock tower has become an annual event that draws the attention of bird lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
