This is the seventeenth year that the Toledo Dental Society has sponsored the “Give Kids a Smile” program. The American Dental Association created “Give Kids a Smile” in 2003 to raise awareness of the importance of dental care for disadvantaged children.

The need for pediatric dental care is great. Nearly 1 in 4 children aged 2 to 11 years has untreated cavities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Poor diet and lack of adequate oral hygiene are largely responsible.

The National Institutes of Health report that 80 percent of tooth decay is found in just 25 percent of children.
