State Senator Randy Gardner, R-Bowling Green, sponsored an amendment that will prevent an 8 percent cut in the Ohio National Guard Scholarship program that would have been levied against colleges and universities in Ohio this fall. The cut would have been a $1.5 million loss.
Gardner was made aware of the pending cut last week following a public forum featuring BGSU President Rodney Rogers and OSU President Michael Drake. He then met with university officials, principally BGSU CFO Sheri Stoll, who told him the recently announced cut would have forced an unbudgeted $117,000 cost to BGSU, and more at some universities in Ohio.
Gardner requested an amendment to fully fund the Ohio National Guard Scholarship, and seven days later the amendment was adopted and is now part of Senate Bill 299 that is headed for Governor John Kasich’s signature.
