In a fruitful collaboration with Educational Solutions Team, Bowling Green City Schools recently offered free Math Summer EdCamps to students. The camps ran from June 18-21 for rising sixth through eighth graders and June 25-28 for rising third through fifth graders, providing an immersive, hands-on learning experience to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while fostering a genuine love for math.

Throughout the camps, students in grades 3-8 engaged in interactive activities designed to make learning math both fun and meaningful. From math games to educational dances, participants explored new math concepts and practiced their skills in a dynamic, supportive environment where students were actively engaged in their learning.

One of the key features of the camp was the R.A.M.P.S. poster, which highlighted essential growth mindset principles. The poster’s message resonated with students: R for Risk, A for Attitude, M for Mistakes, P for Perseverance, and S for Support. This framework encourages students to embrace challenges, maintain a positive outlook, accept and learn from mistakes, persevere through difficulties, and support one another in their learning journeys.

The students were incredibly enthusiastic about the activities. Jace, a fifth grader at Conneaut, said that he enjoyed the math games and making new friends during the camp.

The Math EdCamps also provided a professional development opportunity for Bowling Green City Schools’ math educators. Under the guidance of Educational Solutions Math Specialists Janice Heigl and Jason Bragg, teachers participated in a comprehensive professional development program. This initiative focused on the latest research and best practices in math education, equipping teachers with innovative instructional approaches and resources.

The professional development component was characterized by a studio method of teaching, which emphasized active, inquiry-based learning over traditional lecture methods. Teachers collaborated closely with each other and the Educational Solutions Team, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and exploring new teaching strategies. This collaborative environment enabled teachers to refine their instructional techniques and directly apply them in their interactions with the Math Camp students.

By the end of the program, participating teachers had acquired a robust toolkit of instructional strategies and assessment techniques ready for immediate implementation in their classrooms. The experience enriched the students’ learning and empowered teachers to enhance their teaching practices.

The Math Summer EdCamps exemplify Bowling Green City Schools’ commitment to innovative education and professional development, ensuring that both students and teachers are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in the ever-evolving landscape of math education.
